Visual Language Module

Our first module is now over!
We have just completed our Visual Language module, after 7 weeks of intensive drawing. And as much as i enjoyed it, i have to admit that i am relieved to see the back of it! And am so excited to start our next module; Printing and Embellishment!

Here is some work that i have carried out throughout this last module. I hope you like it, feel free to write any comments! Constructive criticism is always welcome!

Lets start with some paintings. I think i am most competent with my painting skills. I have been taking Art for the past 4 years and have been increasing my skills and techniques throughout. However, i have been working on portraiture for most of these years so my painting skills in floral studies, objects and architecture were a little rusty!

These two images were done using water colours and a fine liner pen. I love working into pictures with a use of lines to highlight shapes and tones. I also love working into pictures making them look busier with more to look at. I think this creates a visually interesting painting.

This was done using Gouache paints.
i love painting in a more expressive style, focusing on colour and brush strokes. i tend to mix the paints as i paint, either on the brush or on the page itself.
This was a first attempt using Gouache paints, as i am used to using acrylics!
The artists i have researched on this page are Vanessa Bell and an old favourite of mine, William Morris!
Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant's work in Charleston, the house of the Bloomsbury group of artsits, is a new interest of mine. The work in the house is beautiful and vibrant and i find the painting style very influential and similar to my own style.

This was an old pipe that i found in a Flea market in Hartlepool! What a little treat! I loved using this for creative studies because of the different surfaces, the wood and the plastic, and the interesting shape of the pipe!

And now for some drawings. Here are a selection of quick sketches and more detailed drawings...

A selection of studies on architecture of places i have been to in my travels. The top study is of a building in Edinbrugh, then a building from Ariquipa in Peru, then finally the Cathedral in Cusco, Peru. An amazing selection of Architecture! In the bottom corner is a study by illustrator; Ron Wilson.

A dress from Bowes Museum in their fabulous textiles and costume room. Definitely worth a look! http://www.bowesmuseum.org.uk/collections/Dress%20%26%20Textile/

I just had to do a sketch of some portraiture. This is a copy of a painting in the Bowes museum, originally by Hyacinth Florentin Lepsqueur, a French painter.

This is a study based on marina life and other water related subjects.
And this is a study based on architecture from my travels once again. Here we have the Cathedral in Durham, Machu picchu and the ruins, a lane in Cusco, the Cathedral in Arequipa again, the Cathedral in Cusco and the Cathedral that originally stood in Church Square in Christ Church, Newzealand before the series of unfortunate and terrible earth quakes.
More to come!
